Investors in People is the mark of high performance in business and people management. IIP has set the standard for better people management. The Standard defines what it takes to lead, support and manage people well for sustainable results.
Having met all the requirements of the Core Standard, SMH was originally recognised as an Investor In People in 2014. In 2017 the company retained its Bronze accreditation having met an additional 52 evidence requirements from the extended framework.This was a particularly great achievement considering the rapid growth that has been achieved over the last three years, most of which has been in the depots and therefore further away from the influence of the Worcester head office. A key factor has been the way the company’s mission and its associated core values relating to ‘Delivering Excellence’ have been retained, promoted and understood throughout the company.
2015 Quality Management System
SMH is accredited for its quality management system which is designed to support the company in ensuring we meet the needs of our customers, whilst delivering a consistent level of quality and satisfaction.
This systematic and process driven approach to managing our business, has been proven to make our managers feel more in control and ensure everyone within the organisation is clear about what they do, whilst having the ability and authority to resolve problems quickly and effectively.
2013 Information Security Management System
Our information security management system is a pro-active approach to effectively managing risks to the security of our company’s confidential information and to ensure GDPR compliance.
The system promotes efficient management of sensitive corporate information, highlighting vulnerabilities to ensure it is adequately protected against potential threats. It encompasses people, process and IT systems.
Information is an asset which, like other important business assets, has significant value and consequently needs to be suitably protected.
This standard helps SMH to co-ordinate our security efforts both electronically and physically; doing so coherently, cost effectively and with consistency, proving to our customers that we take the security of their personal and business information seriously.
2015 Environmental Management System
The Company is committed to controlling the aspects of our business operations that may have a significant impact on the environment and will be focussed on environmental issues on both a local and national scale. We are confident that the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System will help to significantly reduce our waste, carbon footprint and environmental impact. Our Managers are more aware of their environmental responsibilities, including legal and regulatory accountabilities and have the ability to manage and control the associated risks. SMH has a duty to fulfil its corporate social responsibility and is pleased to be investing in a forward-thinking, environmentally aware workforce with processes which actively reduce environmental risks and prevent incidents to both employees and the local environment.
2007 Health & Safety Management System
The Company is committed to being pro-active rather then re-active when approaching health and safety and therefore be more effective at protecting the health and welfare of our workforce. Our health and safety management system will provide a process driven approach to controlling and monitoring risks that can arise from the company’s day to day activities. The system will help our managers be more aware of their legal and regulatory accountabilities and assist them in identifying and controlling the associated risks.
SMH are aware of our health and safety obligation and look to minimise risks and reduce the number of accidents in our workplaces. By conducting rigorous risk and hazard assessments, our customers can be reassured that our services will be delivered within legal requirements and our employees can have peace of mind that they are employed by a company that takes health and safety seriously.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is a registered charity and have been at the heart of accident prevention in the UK and around the world for almost 100 years.
Employed drivers for SMH are enrolled into the RoSPA National Safe Driving Awards scheme (NSDA) which offers attractive incentives for individual company drivers to remain accident-free year after year. The NSDA scheme is really effective in helping to promote a positive safety culture and changing people's attitudes to driving.
For every year a driver is accident free, drivers receive a reward through the RoSPA scheme and a high proportion of SMH drivers have been accident free for 10 years or more. Our drivers are key team players and take pride in delivering the highest standards of driving, road safety and customer service.
Many of our customers, suppliers and other partners may not be aware of our ongoing commitment to helping other people. Yet here at SMH, charity and local community support is a significant part of our culture and company values.
In 2019, SMH donated an impressive £41,000 to UK charities through a variety of fundraising activities. These included Macmillan Cancer Support UK, Midlands Air Ambulance, Sue Ryder St Johns Hospice, Bedford, James Hopkins Trust, Gloucester, Joining Jack, St Helens and the British Heart Foundation.
The key charity that we dedicate our fundraising to each year is Macmillan Cancer Support UK with an annual fundraising target of £10,000. Last year we were delighted to be able to donate an impressive £28,000 to the charity.
