Five ways to reduce fleet fuel costs

Whether you have a few company cars or a fleet of several dozen trucks - keeping your fuel spend as low as possible, is probably the number one challenge you face.

There are however, plenty of simple things you can do to run your fleet more efficiently.

Here are our top tips for trimming fuel costs:

1. Reduce speed

While this may seem obvious, it can save you a lot of cash. The AA says that travelling at 85mph rather than 70mph on the motorway can increase fuel consumption by up to 25%. Multiply that across your entire fleet and that’s a lot of money burned.

2. Switch off in a ‘jam

If your vehicle is going to be stationary for 20 seconds, you’ll see a small fuel saving from turning your engine off – around 0.5 litres per hour. For maximum saving however, the AA recommends switching off if you’re likely to stop for more than three minutes.

3. Set CO2 and MPG caps

If you cap CO2 figures at 140g/km and fuel consumption at an average of 45mpg, you’ll see savings not only in fuel but also in business in kind tax and national insurance. Everyone’s a winner!

4. Check tyre pressure

Tyre pressure is often an afterthought but tyres running at the wrong pressure not only wear quickly; they also increase fuel consumption at a surprising rate. Under-inflated tyres can reduce fuel economy by as much as 10%, according to Auto Trader.

You can keep a handle on tyre pressure by issuing drivers with handheld tyre pressure monitors and making it part of their responsibility to frequently monitor the tyre pressure of their vehicle.

5. Drive sensibly

Harsh braking, wrong gear selection and sharp acceleration all increase fuel intake, so encourage your drivers to use more efficient driving habits.

When accelerating, engine revs should be kept low. Drivers should change gears early, and change them in a ‘block’, (from third to fifth when accelerating) and apply the same principle when changing down through the gears.
